I left my Heart in...

Over spring break, we took a mini-vacation to San Fransisco.  We hadn't taken the girls there since they were too young to remember, so we spent a full two days doing as much as we could in the city.

We spent the bulk of our first day exploring Golden Gate Park.  We had  a lovely picnic near a lake and enjoyed a family-friendly hike to the top of "Strawberry Hill."  The girls had a great time kicking up dirt, climbing things, and spotting wild-life (turtles, ducks, squirrels, and birds.)  We waved to people in paddle boats, stood above a waterfall, and rested under a Chinese pergola.  Later, as we exited the park towards the ocean, we stopped our car and got out to enjoy a colorful field/garden of flowers surrounding a huge windmill. We then walked across the street to the beach for a serene moment of breathtaking beauty.  After we got back in our car we headed over to Chinatown (and got a fun car-tour of the city along the way, including driving down zig-zaggy Lombard Street!)  As we spent a few hours traversing Chinatown, the girls had a lot of fun going in and out of shops looking at all of the little trinkets. My favorites stops were the Chinese bakery and the kite shop. We ate dinner at a tasty Chinese restaurant (although we were disappointed to find out that Dim Sum isn't served after 3 p.m.)  After dinner we headed back to our car with full tummys and tired feet...on to our hotel room for the night.

The next morning we took the BART train back into the heart of the city (our hotel was out by the airport.)  We spent day two riding the train (this part was not just transportation, but a huge thrill and as exciting as almost anything else!), riding the cable car, eating clam chowder in sour dough bread bowls at Fisherman's Wharf, walking through an incredible art (photography) gallery, visiting the "Aquarium of the Bay" (awesome tunnel shark tanks), and experiencing Pier 39!  It was a very full day, but we even managed a quick stop at IKEA on the drive home (barely before they closed) in order to pick up a mattress for Daphne's new big girl bed.  The kids were so worn out by the end of all of that, but everyone was so happy!  They were all such champs and in great moods almost the whole time...it was such a blessing!  I loved this trip with my sweet family...they are truly my joy, and I am so grateful that we got to have this special time together.

Easer Weekend

We spent a lovely Easter Weekend with family.  Aaron's sister Angela was in town with her family Friday, Saturday, and Sunday so the kids got some awesome cousin time on top of the excitement of going to their grandparents' house three days in a row!  They kept themselves busy with many creative adventures like building fairy villages in Grandma's backyard among other things.  Pretend play, a movie at the theater, Easter arts and crafts by Angela, a sleep-over with Julia, forts, dying eggs, brunch, an egg hunt, watching Aunt Sarah in a musical performance at church, a few dinner's together at Grandma's house, jumping on the trampoline, board games, tea party, blowing bubbles, sidewalk chalk...and with all of that we somehow managed to make it home to our own house each night and attended church in our own ward.  Lots of trips back and forth to Grandma's house, lots of gas and travel time, but giving our children these memories was worth it!

The Green Tradition Lives On!

Some traditions are so memorable that they just have to be repeated.  I can remember my mom dying a variety of foods green for St. Patrick's day as I was growing up (somehow you just don't forget green milk!)  She also introduced me to the traditional Irish dish, corned beef and cabbage.  Apparently those vivid meals made quite an impact on me, because ever since Aaron and I were married I have tried to do something to honor this colorful custom!  As newlyweds at BYU we feasted on green meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and over the years have had our share of green vegetables, perfected the art of green jello, and devored an array of delicious green desserts!  This year I baked green dinner rolls to go along with our emerald banquet of peas, cabbage salad, corned beef, potatoes, green jello, and green-frosted mint brownies.  I even baked a loaf of green bread with the leftover dough from the rolls...when the girls opened their lunch boxes at school the next day and discovered their unusually vibrant sandwiches, their friends were green with envy!

February Recap

I realized that February will soon be over and I haven't posted anything all month!  Here are a few of our February adventures:

My Birthday--Breakfast in bed from my kids (with help from their dad) and a fun weekend trip with Aaron to Palo Alto.  The two of us had a blast exploring Stanford campus (Hoover Tower, Art Museum, Chapel, amazing architecture, etc.) on our bikes, sleeping in, eating good food, and shopping!

The girls and I made cake pops for the first time.  It was quite time-consuming, but fun and oh so yummy!

Valentine's Day--Aaron surprised us all on Valentine's morning with chocolate-dipped strawberries, personalized cards, tulips for each of the girls, and red roses for me.

Crazy Hair Day at school--Grace and Eve loved sporting their funky do's.  Also, they are wearing the Valentine's necklaces we made a couple days prior by painting wooden beads and stringing them onto ribbon (simple but fun and really cute...Daphne has worn hers almost every day since!)

Trip to Micke Grove Zoo over President's Day weekend--They especially loved the lemurs.

Babies Don't Keep

I just had the most wonderful morning with Daphne.  I didn't even look at my list of to-dos.  Instead I spent my time walking outside, hand-in-hand, with a two-year old.  Watching and listening to her point out a bird on a branch or an airplane high in the distance, and mimicking their sounds with her cute little impressions.  We jumped on the trampoline together, swung on the swings, pulled the tether-ball on its string around the yard, played house in the playhouse, took a walk around the neighborhood observing which trees had leaves or not, waved to passing cars, and ate lunch outside on this unusually sunny January day.

I too often forget to take moments like these, instead of worrying about accomplishing all the things on my big to-do list.  I need to resist the temptation to feel that I've only accomplished something if there is a tangible result.  I am happy with today's intangible results: giggles, smiles, and sweet memories.  As I realized this when I was putting Daphne down for her nap, the words of a poem that I remember hearing my mom recite came to mind:

Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.

Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
    Lullabye, rockabye, lullabye loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
    Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo

The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo
Look! Aren't his eyes the most wonderful hue?
    Lullabye, rockaby lullabye loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
But children grow up as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

Santa Barbara International Marathon

Last month Aaron and I ran our first marathon...26.2 miles!  It was such a great experience to train together over the last several months and to accomplish this amazing goal that we set together.  I have never considered myself a runner until about a year ago when I started to get into it.  I found that I really enjoyed the satisfaction of beating my own distances and times (not to mention I finally found a sport in which Aaron and I were on equal playing fields!)  We trained for and ran a half marathon in May and decided that if we were ever going to go "all the way" and run a full marathon, this would be the time in our lives for it (we're only getting older, right?!)

So, for months our neighbor from across the street would come over at 5:45 a.m. four days a week to babysit our sleeping kids while Aaron and I would go running together.  It is amazing what the human body is capable of with determination, dedication and consistency.  I am still pretty surprised that in just over a years time I went from thinking I couldn't run 3 miles, to completing a 26.2 mile race.  The best part was that I got to do this with my husband...we were like a little running team: encouraging one another, challenging each other, and secretly trying to outdo the other! There is no way I would have had the discipline to follow through with the training schedule if not for him.

I'm not sure if I will ever run a full marathon again.  I haven't decided if I want to go through all of that again, but I am so glad that I had this opportunity.  Whenever I feel like I need a confidence boost, I can put on my SBI marathon t-shirt and tell myself, "If I can run a marathon, I can do anything!"

Halloween

We had a fun Halloween...especially since we got to celebrate it twice!  On Friday night (28th) we attended a Halloween party at our church where we enjoyed dinner, carnival games, trick-o-treating, and a costume parade.  I even won first prize in the lasagna contest!  Then three nights later on Halloween we went trick-o-treating with some of our neighbors, finishing up with dessert at my friend Julie's house.  The kids and adults all had a great time!

Eve's Birthday

I love that Eve is so easy to please.   In order to fufill her request for a strawberry birhtday party I made a strawberry flavored cake and decorated it to look like a strawberry, put up a few strawberies made out of construction paper and voila...the party of her dreams!  She really was so impressed and grateful for what seemed to be a pretty simple party.  It was fun to have Grandma and Grandpa Lewis along with Aunt Sarah over for dinner and a celebration of Eve's big day.  Grandma even brought a salad that had strawberries in it...how perfect!

Eve's birthday request was to have a baby doll "of her very own."  (By this she meant one that Daphne hadn't taken over.  Somehow every baby doll in the house has been claimed as territory of Daphne.)  As part of this request Eve was very specific to the importance of a baby-back-carrier to put the doll in. (Now that I think about it I'm sure this was her strategy to assure that the baby could stay with her at all times thus avoiding being claimed by Daphne!)  Daphne did not react well to Eve having a baby doll that was off limits.  In the end, sweet Eve couldn't resist sharing with her little sister.

Pumpkins

I love going to the pumpkin patch.  It's the quintessential autumn experience. The crisp air and the warm colors make me happy!  The girls sure had fun picking out their pumpkins and even cooperated for some photos (a certain individual had to be bribed with a lolly to sit still, but I won't name any names.)  Looking at these pictures of pumpkins makes me hungry...I am on a real pumpkin baking kick lately.  I have made pumpkin cookies, a pumpkin roll, even pumpkin pancakes.  Still on the agenda: pumpkin bars and a pumpkin pie!  And while we are on the delicious topic, you have to try Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses...they are amazing!
